If a gas cooktop or gas heating is part of how you picture your new home, it’s worth understanding the new electrification regulations set out in Victoria’s Gas Substitution Roadmap. Victoria is moving away from gas connections in new homes, and here at Meridian, that means gas is only available on a limited number of lots until the end of the year. Read on to discover why Victoria is leading the charge towards a sustainable future and how this impacts your choices at Meridian.

Why gas is being phased out of new homes

The Victorian Government is transitioning away from connecting new homes to the reticulated natural gas network. It’s part of the state’s broader plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with new builds now designed to run entirely on electricity, think induction cooktops, and electric or heat pump hot water and heating. Established homes with existing gas connections aren’t affected. But for new residential land, it changes what’s possible depending on when that land was released.

What this means at Meridian

At Meridian, the change only applies to new lots from Stage 57 onwards. Anything released before that, including Stages 52 and 56, can still be connected to gas, with this infrastructure being installed right now. For owners and builders in those earlier stages, you need to comply with connection obligations before 1st January 2027.

Moving into Stage 57 and beyond, homes will be all-electric, in line with the new state rules. If gas is something you’d like in your new home, it’s worth knowing that this is one of the last chances to secure a gas-connected lot in Victoria as the options are limite

A community that’s already thriving

Meridian is a well-established and well-loved place to live. Over 2,000 residents call it home today, with Meridian Village, Summit Business Park and St Germain Central already open and part of everyday life. Parks, walking paths and local amenities are here, so choosing a lot at Meridian means stepping into an already thriving, established community.

Lots with a lot of potential

At Meridian, there are only a handful of lots available with the option to utilise this gas-connection. With lots ranging in size from 448m² up to 798m² with generous frontages, they offer a scale that’s becoming harder to find in Melbourne’s southeastern growth corridor. If a bigger backyard, a wider frontage or more flexibility with your floor plan matters to you and your family, then one of these lots has your name on them.

The benefits of building new

Buying land and building new also gives you a level of control that can’t quite be replicated with an established home. You choose the layout and the finishes that suit how your family lives. That means no compromises, no hidden costs. Every new build comes backed by current building standards and warranties, so you can move in with confidence from day one.
